There are a lot of fabulous local bakeries in the area, but none quite like Jossi’s Bakery & Shop, which brings the flavors of Honduras and the Caribbean into the mix. Providing not just sweet, but savory treats, such as empanadas, Jossi’s Bakery & Shop in Broadview Heights is the new flavor in town.
“I always liked to be in the kitchen, I like to cook,” Josette Rivera said. “It was my grandma who pushed me to bake.”
Miss Josette is from Honduras and learned the flavors of her culture in her kitchen at home. Then, she moved to Trinidad for a while where she had an opportunity to train in professional pastries with a chef from Portugal who had trained in Paris and worked at the White House. However, Josette started as an accountant and became a stay-at-home before her adventures, so for many years, her work was done simply at home in her own kitchen.
“The kitchen is the place where you can make things you love for your family,” she said. “The kitchen is love, cozy, family….”
In 2011 she and her husband and three children moved to the United States and settled in Parma where much of her family had already settled. After 18 years of working out of her home, baking for friends and family, she decided it was finally time to live her dream.
“The American dream is real, but it is hard,” she said. “You can make whatever you want of yourself if you believe in yourself and you work hard.”
And she did. Realizing that even though she had training and talent, but not an awareness of the American market and baking industry, she thought it would be good to learn by working at a Giant Eagle bakery department for three years.
“When you are an entrepreneur, you are a dreamer,” said Miss Josette. “Which is different than being a business owner.”
But when she was finally ready, her family pitched in to help her achieve her dream. Her husband built her store counter, helped paint the location she found and get it ready for business. Family members who are artists, provided art for the walls, and the Latin business community has also been very supportive.
Josette is also talented in art, which is why she calls her business Jossi’s Bakery & Shop. In addition to her amazing pastries, she also has art and crafts on display for sale. She has already hosted an art exhibition in her shop, supporting local Latin artists.
And to top it off, she offers great coffee.
“I wanted to create something cozy, with good coffee and homemade pastries,” she said. “Food, art…that’s pleasure. It’s something that makes me happy that I can share with people.”
Josette opened her doors on April 15th, 2023 and said the Broadview Heights community has been very supportive. She specializes in custom made cakes for special occasions. But she also offers flavors that are new to the community, such as her guava rolls, empanadas, and savory puff pastries. Her two daughters, ages 25 and 23 both work for Cleveland Cllinic. Her son, age 20 is in college and also helps her at her store.
